What the research on Melanotan II has looked at
- Melanotan II's design and species-dependent potency: the design was published in 1989 as one of a series. In lizard skin it was about 90 times as potent as the natural hormone at darkening pigment cells. In frog skin the same molecules were much weaker. Potency depends on the tissue
- Melanotan II across four melanocortin receptors: it was tested against four of the five human melanocortin receptors. It bound and switched on all four: MC1, MC3, MC4 and MC5. The fifth, MC2, was not tested in any study cited here. So this page makes no claim about it
- Case reports of melanocytic changes: case reports describe melanoma in situ, and changes in moles people already had. In one case a mole was filmed close-up, before and during use. The changes made it hard to tell apart from a melanoma
- Case reports of muscle and vascular harm: other case reports describe serious effects on muscle and on blood flow. One is unusual in that lab testing confirmed the substance really was Melanotan II, checked against a bought sample, which most reports of this kind cannot do
- What vials sold online actually contained: vials sold online were analyzed. Each claimed 10 mg. The measured content ran from 4.32 to 8.84 mg. Samples from two of the three shops carried unknown impurities, at 4.1 to 5.9 per cent
