Selank research: what the published studies show
3 studies cited, each linked to its PubMed record.
Inhibitory Currents in Rat Hippocampal Slices
A 2017 study applied Selank to hippocampal slices and recorded from pyramidal CA1 neurons, where the amplitude and discharge rate of spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents both increased.[1]
In some neurons that increase was preceded by a transient decrease in the same activity.[1] Across the concentration range tested, Selank showed no significant dose-dependence.[1]
Those two qualifications belong with the result rather than after it.[1] An effect with no dose-response relationship is weaker evidence of a direct action than the same effect with one, and this is the only electrophysiological study on the page.[1]
Anxiety Measures in Rats
A 2017 study tested Selank and diazepam in rats on the elevated plus maze, alone and combined, with and without unpredictable chronic mild stress.[2]
Even in the absence of chronic stress, dosing a course of the test substances moved anxiety indicators toward deterioration, though the change after a course of Selank was less pronounced.[2] Selank given alone was the most effective at reducing that raised anxiety.[2]
Under chronic stress, anxiety indicator values after simultaneous diazepam and Selank did not differ from those seen before stress exposure, and that combination was the most effective.[2]
The deterioration finding is the part of this study a product page would leave out, and it applies to both compounds rather than to Selank alone.[2]
Memory and BDNF Under Chronic Ethanol
A 2019 study gave outbred rats 10 percent ethanol as their only fluid for 30 weeks, with Selank at 0.3 milligrams per kilogram daily by intraperitoneal injection.[3]
In the object recognition test, Selank produced a cognitive-stimulating effect in rats not exposed to ethanol, and prevented the memory and attention disturbances developing during alcohol withdrawal.[3]In ex vivo experiments, Selank prevented an ethanol-induced increase in BDNF content in hippocampus and frontal cortex.[3] The direction matters: the compound stopped a rise rather than causing one.[3] The authors describe this as confirming involvement of a neurotrophin mechanism.[3]
State of the Evidence
All three sources are rat studies and two share a journal.[1] No human study of this compound was retrieved.[3] No independent group has replicated any finding here.[2]
The mechanism most often attached to this compound rests on one slice study reporting increased inhibitory currents, a biphasic response in some cells, and no dose-dependence.[1] A page that states a GABAergic mechanism is resting it on that.[2]
Reference 2 complicates the anxiety picture rather than confirming it.[2] Dosing courses of either compound worsened anxiety indicators in unstressed animals, and the strongest claims in that paper are about a combination with a benzodiazepine.[2]
The parent molecule is not this compound.[3] Tuftsin is a four-residue fragment of immunoglobulin G with its own immunological literature, and this is that fragment with three more residues attached.[1] No tuftsin finding appears on this page.[3]
